Tab Napping is a new form of phishing that is hitting the internet now. With the conventional form of phishing, for example, you might receive an email that is supposedly from your bank, and it might ask you to login and update or confirm your account details, of course, there would be a link to your banks website in the email for you to click, which would take you to a page that looks identical to your real banks login page.

How does it works
Tab napping is more sophisticated than the phishing scams we’ve seen so far, and it no longer relies on persuading you to click on a dodgy link. Instead it targets internet users who open lots of tabs on their browser at the same time (for example, by pressing
CTRL + T).
if you have multiple tabs open and you are reading the page on your current active tab, any of the other inactive browser tabs could be replaced with a fake web page that is set up to obtain your personal data, the web page will look exactly the same as the page you opened in the tab, you probably wont even even know it has been replaced with a fake page.
fraudsters can actually detect when a tab has been left inactive for a while, and spy on your browser history to find out which websites you regularly visit, and therefore which pages to fake.
This may surprise you, but phishers and fraudsters in general can actually detect when a tab has been left inactive for a period of time, which means they can spy on your browsing history, this tells them which websites and web pages you visit on a regularly basis, so they'll know which bank you use and which email account you use, whatever you view, they'll know about it, which means they'll know which fake pages to make to replace the real pages in your inactive tabs, you've now left yourself open to become a victim of tab napping.

How can you protect yourself against tab napping?

Here are five simple ways you can prevent yourself from falling victim:
• Make sure you always check the URL in the browser address page is correct before you enter any login details. A fake tabbed page will have a different URL to the website you think you’re using.
• Always check the URL has a secure https:// address even if you don’t have tabs open on the browser.
• If the URL looks suspicious in any way, close the tab and reopen it by entering the correct URL again.
• Avoid leaving tabs open which require you to type in secure login details. Don't open any tabs while doing online banking - open new windows instead (CTRL + N).

Removing Khatra.exe virus from computer

Khatra.exe is a W32 trojan which is the most annoying virus i had ever seen. It appears as khatra.exe, ghost.exe or Xplorer.exe. This virus disable the Task manager and Registry Editor permanently. I was struggling with this idiot for a few days. This virus copies itelf to removable media and spreads to other computers. I searched Internet a lot for removing this and finally i removed it completly from my pc. So, here I'm sharing the instructions for removing the virus below.

Is my PC infected??

This is the first question you will ask. So, if you want to check whether you are affected by khatra.exe, ghost.exe or xplorer.exe virus, do as follows
Open task manager (if you have task manager disabled, this may be most probably because of virus attack. Anyway, to check whether you are affected by khatra virus or any other virus, just follow the first step in the removal instructions below to enable task manager first.)
Now go to process tab and check whether there is khatra.exe, gHost.exe or xplorer.exe (not explorer.exe)
If you see any of the process mentioned above, you can make it sure that your pc is affected by khatra.exe. (khatra in hindi language means danger. Strange virus!). If you dont see any of the above process, you cannot say that your pc is completely free from viruses. Sometimes you may be affected by some other viruses. One of the main symptoms of virus attack are disabling task manager, slowing down of pc and disabling of antivirus (of course, some viruses will disable your antivirus too!). This virus had another interesting property that when you search for "how to remove khatra virus" of similar things from the affected pc on a browser, your browser will automatically close! (i like it!). So, if your pc is infected, follow the steps below,


Steps:
1) To Enable Task manager,
Go To Start> Run

Enter gpedit.msc in the Open box and click OK

In the Group Policy settings window,

Select User Configuration > Select Administrative Templates> Select System > Select Ctrl+Alt+Delete options> Select Remove Task Manager> Double-click the Remove Task Manager option. Now your Task manager is Enabled.

2) If Gpedit is disabled and regedit is enabled, do the following steps to regain task manager

Click Start -> Run. Type in "regedit" (no quotes) and hit Enter.

Search for HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ System.

Look for: DisableTaskMgr. Click on REG_DWORD. Change value to 0

 

3)Click Ctrl+Alt+Del to launch task manager

Now remove all processes such as Khatra.exe, gHost.exe and Xplorer.exe (it is better to select all, right click and click end process tree). Be careful that dont remove explorer.exe in confuse with xplorer.exe. explorer.exe is an essential process for windows explorer.

 

4. Now download and install Everything search tool or similar tools

This is because you need to search and remove all copies of khatra.exe ,ghost.exe and xplorer.exevirus copies from your hard drive. For that you will need a search tool and your in built search tool will be disabled by the virus.

5. Remove all the copies of virus

Launch the app you downloaded. Search for khatra.exe, ghost.exe,Xplorer.exe and remove all one by one.

you can also download any other tools similar to everything search. Usually this will take some time. Don't forget to search in hidden folders and system folders. There shouldnot be any copy left in your harddisk.

6. Disable registry entries
Open registry editor (go to start>run, type regedit and enter)
Search for all keys with values khatra, gHost or xplorer and remove all entries.

Done! Now restart PC and it is better

Using Windows Netsh Utility

The Network Shell (netsh) utility is basically developed to let users configure network devices in

 

Now, first you need to check weather your network interface supports virtualization or not. Simply, run the following command to view Hosted network supported status.

In case, it says No, you will need to update your both client and server editions of Windows. The support for configuring WLAN using netsh was first introduced in Windows Vista, and it’s now available in Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 and Windows 8. Using netsh wlan command, one can easily use hosted network (virtualization) feature to create a virtual wireless connection. The Hosted Network is WLAN feature, which is designed to implement virtualization of physical network adapter. Since it plays a vital role in creating a virtual wireless adapter, it’s used by a majority of virtual Wi-Fi hotspot applications, such as Virtual WiFi Router, MyPublicWiFi, Marfi etc. So, if your NIC supports wireless hostednetwork / virtualization feature, then you can create an ad hoc wireless connection and turn your PC into Wi-Fi hotspot.

As stated earlier, both Windows 7 and Windows 8 natively support configuring ad hoc wireless connection using the netsh commands. In order to create an ad hoc connection in Windows 8 using netsh utility, run CMD with administrative privileges’; just type cmd on Start Screen, right-click it and select Run as administrator.

When the hosted network is started, enable ICS for newly created Wi-Fi connection, so that you can share your internet connection with others. In order to enable ICS feature, head over to Network and Internet –> Network Connections, and open Properties dialog of network device (which is connected to internet). Now, open Sharing tab, enable Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection, and then choose the newly created ad hoc connection from the list. In our case, it’s Wi-Fi 2, as shown in the screenshot below.

 

Once the internet connection is shared, check the IP address assigned to newly created ad hoc connection from TCP/IPv4 Properties. If it doesn’t assign IP address, then run netsh wlan start hostednetwork command in CMD.

 

After following the above steps, you will be able to connect Wi-Fi enabled devices with your Windows 8 PC.
